11 Josiah became the father of Jechoniah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.
11. Josiah begat Jechoniah ― Matthew again omits a short half-generation in his genealogy. Jechoniah is the son of Jehoiakim[1], and Jehoiakim is the son of Josiah, making Jechoniah the grandson of Josiah. Jehoiakim's reign was marked by turmoil and ultimately cut short due to his rebellion against Babylon[2]. Jehoiakim (and his lineage) was cursed and excluded from the throne of David[3].
Even though the seed of Jehoiakim was not allowed to be on the throne[4], this divine decree is reversed[5] because of the repentance of Jechoniah. Repentance can reverse a decree against the righteous as it states, “You (Hezekiah) will die[6]” and after repentance, “Behold I am healing you (Hezekiah) and will add fifteen years to your days[7].” Rambam discusses this more in length[8].
