In a bustling city filled with towering skyscrapers and bustling streets, Azrael, the Angel of Death, was on a unique mission. His task was to collect the soul of a man who believed himself to be immortal, all due to a tiny error. You see, all the names of every person alive are written in a book, and next to their name is the day their soul is supposed to be taken back up to heaven. However, this man's date had an extra number in it, which made it look like he was supposed to live for 1,000 years!
Azrael realized the mistake and appeared before the man. Azrael was met with a surprising sight. The man looked young but was nearly 100 years old. The man stood tall and confident, a smirk playing on his lips as he eyed the angel.
"Well, well, well," the man said with a smirk, "if it isn't Death himself paying me a visit. I must say, I expected someone a bit more intimidating."
Azrael raised an eyebrow. "I am Azrael, the Angel of Death, and it is time for your soul to depart this world."
The man chuckled, crossing his arms defiantly. "Ah, but you see, I am immortal. I've never met my match, and I don't intend to start now. I've fallen off buildings, I've wrestled bears, and I've survived things that no human can. I can prove I'm immortal!"
Azrael thought about it for a moment and then laughed. "I'll tell you what. This scythe I have is what I use to take souls. I will not use it on you, but if you are truly immortal, then touch it, and we'll see if you're telling the truth."
The man saw Azrael's confidence and thought maybe he was telling the truth. Maybe the scythe was the only thing that could take him. The man said, "Touching a silly scythe is nothing. I have a better idea! Follow me, and I will prove it in a different way!"
The man said, "Come with me to the city's annual food festival. Everyone who eats a whole spicy pepper from Mr. Friedman's booth ends up in the hospital. They are just too hot to eat!" Azrael went wit hthe man. The man confidently bought a whole bag of Mr. Friedman's peppers, reached into the bag and pulled out a whole handful of the hottest peppers. A crowd gathered around to watch. Many people yelled, "Don't eat those! You'll hurt yourself!" The man put them all into his mouth, chewed them all up, and swallowed them. He instant turned red and gasped for water. Azrael, simply watched with an amused expression. The man, tears in his eyes from the spice, managed to laugh through his coughs, "See? No normal human could do that!" The crowd cheered in amazement.
Azrael said, "Maybe you just like spicy food, and it isn't that hot for you."
"Ok, follow me then! This will surely prove it!" The man said as he marched down the road with a crowd following him.
They went to the tallest skyscraper in the city. The crowd stood below, waiting to see what was next. He went to the very top and looked out over the edge as the wind blew his hair around. "Watch this," the man declared and then took a large leap off the top of the building! Azrael, with a flick of his wrist, made a large gust of wind come up from under the man and gently land him back down to the ground. The man landed on his feet, unharmed, and exclaimed, "See, immortal!" The crowd was cheering louder than ever!
Azrael laughed, "The wind saved you. You might be lucky, but not immortal."
The man started to get annoyed by Azrael. He said, "How can I prove it? Give me a difficult challenge."
Azrael thought for a moment and then said, "Follow me to the Whispering Pit." Azrael led the man to the Whispering Pit with a much larger crowd behind them. When they arrived at the pit, the man looked down into it. It was dark and misty, he couldn't see the bottom. It has a loud hissing noise coming from it. The man said, "What must I do?"
Azrael found a coin on the ground and tossed it into the pit. After a few seconds, you could hear the coin hit the bottom. Azrael said, "Jump down there and then bring the coin back up with you. Once you do that, I will return back to heaven."
The man laughed; this was a smaller jump than the tower. "You have a deal!" The man jumped down. Suddenly, there was a thud. The crowd was quiet. But then, from the dark pit, you could hear whistling, and then a loud voice from the pit yelled, "I found your coin, I'm coming up!" The man was whistling joyfully as he climbed up the dark pit! The crowd laughed, feeling relieved. As the crowd patiently waited, the whistling got louder as he got closer. Soon, he was close to the edge of the pit.
"Would you like help up?" Azrael asked.
"Sure!" The man said, his arms and legs tired from the long climb.
Azrael set his scythe on the ground by his feet and helped pull the man up. The man finally crawled out of the pit and stood on his feet. He bent down to dust off his pants and then realized he was standing on Azrael's scythe. He looked at Azrael, who was smiling.
The man dropped to the ground. The crowd gasped! Azrael took his scythe in one hand and the soul of the man in the other. And then flew up into the sky with the man who thought he could never be caught.
Below, everyone went quiet, their cheers gone like whispers in the night. The man, who tried so many brave stunts, finally found something he couldn't beat by just being bold or fearless.
The man thought he could do anything, but sometimes, we need to remember there are things we can't control. It's important to remember that life is very special, a gift that we should take care of and not take for granted by doing things that are too risky. The man's adventures might have been fun, but they also remind us to be careful and cherish every day.
No matter how clever or strong we think we are, everyone has their time. We must learn to make the best of our days, to be kind, to seek fairness, and to be gentle and brave.
