Numash: Matthew

Updated: Sep 30

The Numash project is an in-depth, verse-by-verse commentary on the Gospel of Matthew, designed to reconcile the text with rabbinic and Hebraic thought. This scholarly endeavor aims to explore the linguistic, theological, and cultural dimensions of Matthew, offering insights that align with Orthodox Jewish perspectives, particularly through the lens of Torah observance and rabbinic texts.

The commentary integrates a wide array of sources, including the Talmud, Midrash, Zohar, and Chassidic teachings, to provide a comprehensive analysis of each verse. The linguistic approach examines the Greek text of the Gospels alongside their ancient Hebrew terms and concept conterparts, identifying translation issues and offering alternative interpretations that stay true to the text and Hebraic view while avoiding the Greek philosophical injections that many translations are rooted in.

Additionally, the Numash commentary provides historical, geographical, and cultural context to help readers understand the socio-political climate during the time of Yeshua. This project does not just highlight the significance of Yeshua’s role but also seeks to explain the theological debates, such as those concerning Torah observance, in the context of Judaism.

Ultimately, Numash aims to create a bridge between the New Testament and rabbinic thought, offering a rich, scholarly perspective that honors the Jewishness of the text while providing new insights into its meaning.
