Righteous

“PRACTICTIONER OF G-DLY DEVOTION”

The term "righteous" (צדיק, Tzadik) is used to describe individuals who live according to the ethical and religious precepts of scripture and exhibit a high level of moral and spiritual integrity. A righteous person is someone who consistently practices justice, kindness, and devotion to G-d, often going beyond the letter of the law to fulfill the spirit of the law.

Righteousness is not solely about adherence to religious rituals but encompasses a holistic approach to life, where one's actions, speech, thoughts, and intentions are aligned with the values given to us by G-d. This includes acts of charity, kindness, and a commitment to communal welfare and justice.

Abraham is often cited as an exemplar of righteousness. His faith and trust in G-d are highlighted in Genesis 15:6

"And he believed in the L-RD; and He counted it to him for righteousness."

Abraham's willingness to follow G-d's commandments, even when they demanded great personal sacrifice, such as the binding of Isaac (Genesis 22), demonstrates his unwavering faith and righteousness.

Righteousness is not an innate or inherited status but an achievable goal for every individual through the process of repentance, learning, and dedication. The potential to become a righteous person is within reach for all, as every person is believed to have the capacity to overcome challenges and grow spiritually with the help of G-d.

The truly righteous are seen as spiritual pillars whose closeness to G-d and deep spiritual insight enable them to intercede on behalf of G-d’s people and channel Divine blessings to the world.
